Angelina Jolie Sent My Students Autographed Photos In Response to Our Letters!

Let me describe how this all came about in my classroom. I am an American in Taiwan teaching English to many students everyday. I am author of novels "George's Pond" & "West's Time Machine." The older students, those in fourth grade to eighth grade are more advanced in English, so I decided to take on a new project; writing letters to movie stars. This would be an excellent opportunity for them to practice their English writing skills and letter writing skills in hopes that they would grow from the experience.

We then watched several Angelina Jolie movies. One being Tomb Raider, the other being Tomb Raider 2. I thought she was a great example to Asian girls because of Angelina’s powerful personality and character in all her movies. The students watched and were very surprised to see a woman performing such dangerous stunts, all the while never running away from a fight, but instead bravely standing her ground, allowing the fight to come to her.

Each student was given a single paper to write on. Each paper would hold about 100-150 words on each side, making a total of 200-300 words when finished. There was a small area on one side for students to draw a picture in and another on the other side for putting a photograph in. Kids loved writing the letters to her. They talked about movies they saw her in, how brave she always was, about their favorite scenes in the movies and even asking her personal questions.

When they had finished writing both sides, they drew pictures at the bottom of the paper. It was about 25% of the papers size, so they had plenty of room to draw. Some drew fighting scenes from Tomb Raider, others drew a close up of Angelina Jolie’s face, yet others just drew things they knew how to draw like pocket-monsters, Hello Kitty, and so on. Students were allowed to put up to four stickers on the paper if they had them.

After that students brought a photo from home of themselves and we taped them to the back of the letters. Students put on some last finishing touches, then I mailed them out.

It makes me laugh just thinking about one of the kids in the class. His name is Chris and he is one of the most cheerful and friendly kids I ever met. When we talked in class about possibly getting a response from Angelina Jolie, his remarks were incredibly straightforward. He said, “I love Angelina Jolie! I will keep the photograph forever and put it up on the wall by my bed, so every morning when I wake up, I can say, I love you baby!” I think this sixth grader’s straightforward response sums up the feelings of every student in the class, not to mention the teacher.
We have written letters so far to Angelina Jolie (Tomb Raider), Will Smith (I-Robot), Tobey Maguire (Spiderman), and Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter). Angelina Jolie is our first to respond, and with a wonderful autographed photo (10”x8” color) for everyone! The students said they thought a big movie star would not care about them, and probably not write them back, but inside they hoped so much to get a response, to be recognized and appreciated by their idol. I’m sure Angelina’s response will be a memory that they will carry with them as long as they live, and I was lucky enough to be a part of that memory.

Being a teacher of English in Taiwan, I am often in search of new and unique ways of getting the students interested in writing and speaking English. I decided to try writing letters to some American movie stars in hopes that perhaps, if we were very lucky, we would get a single autographed photo for the entire class to put on the classroom wall. The First movie star to answer did so in a way that is much like her personality, absolutely incredible! We had two of our classrooms write letters and draw pictures on them. The kids protested saying that Angelina Jolie would not care about them. They refused to believe that she would take notice of them, since they live so far away in Taiwan. After showing them two of her movies, I tried to explain to the classroom that Angelina Jolie is not like other movie stars, she is the Princess Diana of America! They didn’t quite understand that comparison. The next day I printed out photos of Angelina Jolie doing charity work in Kenya, South Africa and many other poor countries that usually people around the world often ignore. They began to understand that of all the movie stars in America, she was someone special, someone who not only believes that she can change the world, but someone who takes herself away from her mansions and movie sets to take time in noticing and finding ways of helping those who need it most. The name Angelina if you look up its meaning says, ‘a messenger of God.” Indeed Angelina Jolie lives up to that title and then some. I would like to say thank you to Angelina Jolie, from me and all of my students for this wonderful and thoughtful gift. I wish that I could express how happy they were when they received the autographed photos, but words could not do it justice. That sparkle in their eyes and smiles on their faces was a moment of teaching that I will never forget.

Poem: Jacket of Acceptance by Scott C. Waring

Jacket of Acceptance by Scott C. Waring.

I grow, listen, learn then grow again.
I bring home a perfect report card, in hopes of the bicycle promised.
Father calls it a lie and readies his belt.
I call it a broken promise and a lost hug.

I lay in bed listening to yelling till I nod off upon a damp pillow.
Mother calls it healthy discussions.
I call it humiliation and intimidation.

I lay on the sofa pondering my future.
Mother calls me spoiled rotten.
I call it a lost childhood mixed with feelings of invisibility.

A summer job for a jacket of acceptance, but instead the money went to my father.
Father calls it my duty to the family.
I call it a lost opportunity to break out of shyness.

I read books at my bedroom desk.
Father calls me lazy and unappreciative.
I call it an escape from me.

I work my way through school.
My father calls it a waste of time.
I called it financial independence.

I study for exams and construct plans for tomorrow.
My Dean of Counseling calls me overly Controlling.
I call it trying to obtain the desired effects.

I leave to Asia to take a job.
My Asian friend says I’m taking advantage of his people.
I say I am dedicating my future to the education of his people.

I loosen up and joke a bit.
My wife calls me childish and immature.
I call it relinquishing my control.

My son is born.
My friend calls him a weighty responsibility and stress.
I call him the center of my universe.

I allow my wife’s parents to move in.
My subconscious tells me I’m in for trouble.
I call it giving my son the opportunity to be loved by many.

I answer my wife’s questions about my youth.
She calls it insufferably painful and gloomy.
I call it the road that led me into her loving arms.

Poem: Our Longing By Scott C. Waring o_O

Our Longing A Poem by SCW.

Fumes of a passing bus,

traffic lights dictating our future,

horns honking in protest –

these are the streets we walk everyday.

A concrete labyrinth which we call home,

a place in our hearts that cages us within cement walls

from the vast unpredictability of the city.

More and more we come to depend on

the convenience of getting dreams now.
Patience sticks to our shoes only

to be wiped off with a disgusted look of irritancy.

Now is the time, for what doesn’t matter,

but now is the time nevertheless and so we must have,

must desire, must yearn for it until it is ours.

Our longing focuses on the possession in the window that comes with a guarantee to cure our woes and fill our emptiness within.
We stop and gaze at a price tag, weighing the financial loss against the emotional gain.
It might as well have a sign that reads happiness on sale now.

Our fear of losing what we don’t even have begins to take control.

To not buy is to not have

and to not have is to yearn deeply for,

but that’s okay because we will never dive that deeply

within ourselves for fear of the creatures that swim at such depths.

I Sent Two Novels Into Space To Include Them Into Alien Libraries!

Eventually in time books and paper will fade and crumble, CDs and computers will age and be thrown away, yet radio waves in space will travel for millions and billions of years, making our words and thoughts immortal. Think about it. My novels could be read by a new unknown species far away, another place, another time! Its like sending your information through a time machine into the future.

My name is Scott C। Waring and on December 17, 2008 and January 11, 2009 I sent my two novels Georges Pond and Wests Time Machine, into deep space making them the first ever novels in the world to ever by shot into space in word perfect format, including photographs of the front and back covers. Understand that at this very minute they are traveling at the speed of light across the universe. That means they are traveling 186,000 miles per second, yet in one day it will travel over 16 billion miles and in one full year it will have traveled over 5.8 trillion miles! Now that is something to crow about. I also plan to do this with my next two novels, Dragons of Asgard.

To accomplish this I went to http://www.talk2ets.com/। They are a fantastic company that offers to send up to 2MB of information + 1000 words more for a small price. They us the most current satellite technology using satellite-to-space technology for sending info. They use a six meter parabolic reflector dish and a powerful 500+ watt BUCs (block up-converters) to accomplish the transmission. They took my two novels and coupled it to a carrier wave that they believe is most likely to be noticed by any intelligent technologies around the universe. They not only send the information, but they sent it four times, once every six hours so that it covers all directions, giving my book the greatest chance of being noticed by an intelligent species out there!
Why do you think that organizations like CETI spend millions of dollars per year listening and hoping to hear a message from another planet? They clearly believe there is life out there and so do I. Take for instance the Arecibo message which was sent by SETI and beamed upon frequency modulated radio waves into deep space during a celebration of the remodeling of the Arecibo Radio Telescope, in Puerto Rico. It happened in November 17, 1974. The message described humans, their DNA and mathematics. August of 2001, a response came in the form of two mysterious crop circles just a few meters from the Arecibo Radio Telescope, which looked similar to the message sent. Within the crop circles, some slight changers were made. The message said the aliens has a total population of 21.3 billion. Also instead of a human figure, it had a short body with a large head and two large dark eyes. On top of that, there was also some change in the basic DNA structure of the message from the ET. It had an additional third strand shown on the left and also a change in the number of nucleotides indicates a different DNA to ours. The signal, transmitted at 2380 megahertz with a duration of 169 seconds, delivered an effective power of 3 trillion watts, the strongest man-made signal ever sent.
Sending messages into space is a fun way to let other species aware that you know they exist, and to let them know, you exist too!

Book Review of West’s Time Machine, A Novel for Kids.

Foreword Magazine called it, “a fascinating adventure through time.” West’s Time Machine is an exhilarating novel that is jam packed with 187 pages of never-ending action. For those who love the thrill of time travel and those who love Einstein, this book combines the two to create the adventure of a lifetime.

A year after the tragic car accident that killed West and Gina’s parents, the kids come across some old boxes in a shed. The boxes belonged to their parents and to their amazement, one of them contained the parts of a 1955 Harley Davidson. West felt that his parents would love to have put that old bike together, so as a tribute to them, he and his baby sister begin to piece together the motorcycle until they at last finish it in all its glory.

The old shed that contained the box of motorcycle parts also held many other boxes with the bold white letters ‘Property of NASA,’ written across them. The kids catch sight of these and asked their grandmother about them. As it turns out, their father bought them long ago at a NASA auction and thought he could build something useful from all the parts. West and Gina decide to search through the boxes to see what fun treasures they might find. They find a mysterious brown folder marked TOP SECRET. They opened the folder and found the plans for building an actual time machine. They quickly set upon themselves to build this machine from the parts in the boxes. Once built, they attached it to the side of the motorcycle.

When trying out the motorcycle, they accidently activate the time travel box, which transports them back in time to the August 5th, 1948. Here they meet Albert Einstein. He becomes fascinated by the motorcycle and takes it for a joy ride. West and Gina jump on behind him and shoot through time until they find themselves safely back at home in 2008.

The two kids teach Albert Einstein about the many technological marvels of today, like laptop computers and on-line chatting plus much more. When West’s teacher takes a small break to have her baby, Einstein gets the chance to take over. Albert takes the time machine box off the motorcycle and brings it to class with him in hopes of learning more about it. When Albert isn’t paying attention, one of the students begin messing with the time machine and in avertedly ends up sending the entire classroom and its contents into the past to 1875. The students are taken aback at first, but then decide that they should take this opportunity to look around a bit at their surroundings.

West encounters Billy The Kid in a jail cell window and gets talked into reaching in the adjacent window to grab the jail keys off the desk. He hands them to Billy, not wanting to leave a kid behind bars. After some interesting interactions with the local towns folk, Einstein leads them back to their classroom and turns on the time machine taking them all back to the present. This causes the students to go home, raving about the great Mr. Albert and how he caused them to become more interested in science and history. The school principal is so taken aback that he offers Mr. Albert the chance to teach West’s classroom for the rest of the week.

Gina and West beg Albert to help them rescue their parents who died in a devastating car crash one year earlier. When Albert is certain that he has learned how to control the time machine, all three of them get on the motorcycle and begin traveling through time. Suddenly West and Gina’s argument breaks out into a hitting and kicking fight while on the bike. They accidentally hit some of the time machine controls, sending them not to the past, but sprawling forward into the future! More than 2300 years into the future, where they find the last city left on Earth, Atlantis. The three of them get shrunk down to size of raisins so that they can enter the miniature city of Atlantis, where they find the only food sources are insects and fungus. Trying to save the people of Atlantis, they strap the time machine box to both the motorcycle and the tiny city in an attempt to bring them back to the year 2007, when food and life on Earth is plentiful and their parents were alive. When they arrived, they had only minutes to prevent their parent’s car accident. The people of Atlantis offered to pay back his kindness by helping to save his parents.

It is a captivating book with adventure around every corner. They travel through time not once, but many times, encountering many oddities and wonders that stimulate the creativity and imagination of the reader. This is a must have for any library. This novel can be found at any on-line bookstore like Amazon.com or BarnesandNoble.com.

Book Review of George’s Pond, a Novel for kids.

Foreword magazine called it “an enchanting story with significant emphasis on the values of friendship and family.” This book that’s brought tears and laughter to so many readers, is a novel that we tend to take for granted. It emphasizes friendship and family before all else. If you enjoyed reading the wonderful adventures of E.B. White’s Charlotte’s Web, then you will truly come to love George’s Pond. It’s become very popular among elementary school libraries and junior highs across the country. It handles the inevitability of the cycle of life with more skill and wisdom than any novel since E.B. White wrote Charlotte’s Web. This novel can be found at any on-line bookstore like Amazon.com or BarnesandNoble.com.

The full title is George’s Pond, Created in the Beloved Tradition of Charlotte’s Web, by author Scott C. Waring. In this187 page novel, a curious character sprouts up. His name is George and he is a fearless and entertaining little turtle.

When the sun begins drying up his shallow puddle of water and the hungry crow’s overhead threatens George, his future seems bleak until a boy and his dog stumble upon the turtle in the nick of time. The ten-year old boy called West and his dog Friendly take the turtle home to an old two-story farmhouse. There the boy names the turtle after George Washington, his favorite president. Not long after this, the boy rescues a baby gray squirrel that he names Nadia.

The boy learns that all three animals can speak, and only he understands them. This brings them closer together during many great adventures of exploring the back yard. West shows the turtle his remote controlled helicopter, which is quickly commandeered by George and used in many of their travels in the back yard. Their bonds of friendship grow until they can no longer see each other’s differences, but instead look upon one another as family.

An eviction notice by the local bank informs the owners that either they pay up all past payments, or must leave the property within 30 days. The looming eviction causes West and his three friends to begin to wonder what will happen if they lose the house and property, but is far outweighed by the threat of losing each other forever.
George, Nadia and Friendly, decide to explore the attic. They discover an old map hanging on the wall. It’s a map of the back yard showing what it looked like before the house was built. Upon the map they found B.B.’s Gold Mine. They realized the significance of their find and began the hunt for the lost mine.

Time was not on their side; only a few days still remained before the bank took away their farm. They soon found B.B.’s Gold Mine. The mines entrance went downward into the ground where they found a vast maze of tunnels till they came upon a large room. Within the huge cave was a shallow pond that was forty meters in diameter. Thousands of tiny lighting bugs lit up the cave wall with their tiny bottoms glowing powerfully.

George swims along the shallow cave pond and attempts to explore its bottom for any gold nuggets that might still remain. Friendly and Nadia search the area around its edges. As the little turtle was swimming across the pond, he found a small island at its opposite end. Upon the island he discovered something greater than gold, his long lost grandfather. He teaches the little turtle the meaning of freedom, the history of his family and the importance of loyalty to those you love.

When the boy confronts the large turtle, he discovers that this aged turtle once, belonged to his Father, but had been set free because he loved his turtle and wanted it to be happy.

In the end, George the turtle, Friendly the farm dog and Nadia the silver squirrel manage to find a large gold nugget, thanks to the old turtle they meet on the island. Nadia gets legions of squirrels to make a walking carpet to carry the gold nugget upon. Upon this cute and furry carpet, the farm boy and his pets carry the gold down the street all the way through the small town until they reach the bank. There they deliver the gold to the bank manager, who was just three minutes from closing the bank for the day.

Overall, this book will enthrall both children and adults alike. Readers will defiantly find marvelous and useful life lessons within these pages, from being kind to those who are different, to helping those who are in need. George’s Pond is a fantastic story for all ages, and will make you both laugh and cry throughout this awe-inspiring tale.

Chile: Incandescent Object Plunges from Sky over Puerto Montt, Puerto Varas

A UFO entering or atmosphere? Seldom do we get the chance to photograph one of the most striking phenomena that our universe has to offer: the entry of a strange body into the terrestrial atmosphere.

The images and video were sent by Ricardo Vargas from Puerto Montt although other users such as Christian Munoz also confirms having witnessed the descent around 8 a.m., although from Puerto Varas.

It is more than likely just a meteor, that is to say, a space rock falling toward earth without fully disintegrating, forming what we romantically dub “shooting stars”. However, burned-out satellites and boosters fall to earth, generating flames during the process.

What is it, really? That’s up to you. But don’t forget to make a wish, just in case.
